Volcan Fuego

🇬🇹 Chimaltenango Department · Guatemala — Altitude 3298 m

Local time UTC-6Checked 0 viewsHDMountains

This live camera points at Volcan Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in Central America, rising about 3,300 metres above the highlands of Guatemala. It is useful for anyone following the volcano's activity or planning a visit to the region.

The volcano and its setting

Volcan Fuego stands in the Chimaltenango Department of Guatemala, close to the older Acatenango and within sight of the country's central highlands. It is a steep, cone-shaped stratovolcano that has erupted repeatedly in recent centuries, and its name, meaning fire, reflects that history. The surrounding landscape is a mix of pine and oak forest, farmland and deep volcanic ash valleys, with a cool, highland atmosphere quite unlike the coast.

What to watch on the stream

The stream is a mountain view, so the most useful things to follow are the summit area, plumes of steam or ash and how the cloud cover moves across the cone. Activity can vary a great deal from hour to hour. Early morning and late afternoon often give the clearest air, while cloud and rain can hide the summit for long periods, especially in the wet season.

Practical notes and getting there

The region has a highland climate, with a dry season from roughly November to April and a wet season in the middle of the year. Mornings are usually clearer than afternoons. Guatemala City is the main gateway, and the drive into the highlands takes a few hours. The only other camera we list for this area is Santa Maria Volcano - Santiaguito, about 77 km away.
