Guttannen - Oberaar
🇨🇭 Bern · Switzerland — Altitude 2305 m
This camera looks out over the high country above Guttannen, a small village in the Haslital of the Bernese Oberland. It is useful for anyone wanting to see current alpine conditions, snow cover and cloud movement before planning a hike or drive into the mountains.
Guttannen lies at the upper end of the Haslital, a glacier-carved valley that runs south towards the Grimsel Pass. The region is known for its steep rock faces, meadows and high reservoirs built for hydropower. The village sits at a modest elevation, but the surrounding peaks rise well above the tree line, giving the area a distinctly raw, mountain character that changes quickly with the weather.
The view is most rewarding in clear morning light, when peaks are sharp and shadows are long. In winter the slopes are generally snow-covered, and in early summer you may see melt and the reservoirs filling. Afternoon clouds often build over the high ridges, so the sky can change within an hour. Depending on the view, conditions on passes and roads may be visible as well.
Summer, roughly from June to September, is the most practical season for hiking and driving to the high passes, though some roads close with snow outside that window. Temperatures in the valley are mild in summer and cold in winter, and the mountains can be windy at any time of year. Nearby cameras include Grimsel Hospiz and Gelmersee, which show other parts of the same high landscape.
