Kandersteg - Berghotel Oeschinensee
🇨🇭 Bern · Switzerland — Altitude 1598 m
This camera looks out from the mountain hotel above Lake Oeschinen, a high alpine lake reached on foot or by chairlift from the Bernese Oberland village of Kandersteg. It is useful for judging mountain conditions and light on the water before planning a walk. The live player, local weather and map sit below.
Oeschinensee lies at about 1,600 metres in a basin of limestone cliffs and meadows, with glaciated peaks rising behind it. Kandersteg is a small village in the Kander valley in the canton of Bern, known as a gateway to hiking and the Lötschberg rail tunnel corridor. The surroundings are quiet, green in summer and white in winter, and the water often changes colour with the sky.
The view is of the lake and the surrounding slopes, so the most telling moments are early morning, when shadows fall across the water, and late afternoon, when the cliffs light up. In winter, snow cover and wind on the surface are the things to notice. Clouds often build over the peaks in the afternoon, so the picture can change quickly even when the valley looks clear.
Summers are mild and winters are cold with plenty of snow, so late June to September suits hiking, while winter suits snow sports. Getting to the lake usually means a walk of roughly an hour from the valley or a chairlift, and conditions can differ from the village below. Nearby on VizCams you can also view Kandersteg's winter and summer toboggan runs, the Nordic centre and Sunnbüel.
