This live camera looks out over Berchtesgaden, a market town tucked into the Bavarian Alps close to the Austrian border. It is a good way to check conditions in the valley before planning a walk, a drive or a day trip into the mountains.
Berchtesgaden sits at about 600 metres above sea level, surrounded by steep limestone peaks and forest. It is best known as the gateway to Berchtesgaden National Park and the glacier-fed Königssee, and its historic salt mining heritage still draws visitors. The town has a compact centre with wooden-balconied houses and an alpine atmosphere that changes quickly with the weather.
Depending on the view, you may see the town rooftops, the surrounding slopes and the mountain tops above the valley. Clear mornings often show the peaks most sharply, while cloud and fog can roll in during the afternoon. Winter brings snow to the slopes, and the view is most rewarding in clear weather when the high ridges are visible.
The area has warm summers and cold, snowy winters, with rain possible in any season. June to September suits hiking, while December to March is the time for skiing nearby. Nearby cameras on the Jenner, the FlyingCam and the Kehlstein road give you a wider picture of the same mountain weather.
