Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Zugspitze
🇩🇪 Bavaria · Germany — Altitude 2915 m
This camera looks out from Germany's highest mountain area, the Zugspitze near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria. It is a useful window onto alpine conditions, showing how the sky, cloud and snow are moving over the Bavarian Alps before you travel.
The Zugspitze rises above the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen at close to 3,000 metres and is the highest summit in Germany. The surrounding landscape is limestone and alpine meadow, with deep valleys running down toward the Bavarian towns below. The mountain is well known to walkers, skiers and anyone who wants wide views across the Alps, and the summit area is reached by cable car and railway from the valley.
The view changes quickly at this altitude, so it is worth checking at different times of day. Mornings often bring clear air, while afternoons can build cloud around the peaks. In winter the slopes may be white with fresh snow, and in summer you may see the greens of the valleys contrasted with bare rock. Cloud, fog and wind can hide the summit for long periods, so the live view is the best guide to conditions.
The mountain is best visited in summer for hiking and in winter for skiing, though weather can change within an hour at this height, so warm layers are advisable. Other cameras on the same mountain show the view east over the Höllental and north from the summit, and a further camera at Ehrwald offers a different angle on the same range.
