La Porte - San Jacinto Monument
🇺🇸 Texas · United States — Altitude 10 m
This live camera looks toward the San Jacinto Monument in La Porte, on the eastern edge of the Houston metropolitan area. It is useful for a quick check of the sky and conditions over the Houston Ship Channel region before you plan a trip.
La Porte is a small industrial and waterfront city on Galveston Bay, south-east of Houston. The San Jacinto Monument, a tall granite obelisk, marks the site of the 1836 battle that secured Texas independence from Mexico. The landscape is flat, marshy and shaped by the bay, and the area is closely tied to the petrochemical industry and to the Ship Channel that links Houston to the Gulf of Mexico.
Depending on the view, you may see the monument, open sky over the bay, passing shipping traffic and the changing light across the water. Clear mornings and late afternoons tend to be the most interesting, when the sun lights the obelisk. Summer brings towering clouds and sudden thunderstorms, which can make the view change quickly.
The Gulf Coast climate is humid and warm for most of the year, with hot summers and mild winters. Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons to visit. Nearby cameras cover Nassau Bay and downtown and east-side Houston, so you can compare conditions across the wider area.
