This live camera looks out over South Padre Island on the Gulf coast of Texas, with a view toward the Starbase area. It is useful for seeing how the coast looks right now, whether the sky is clear over the water, and how busy the island is. The stream comes from LabPadre and is embedded here with a link back to the source.

About the island

South Padre Island is a narrow barrier island at the southern tip of Texas, separated from the mainland by the Laguna Madre, a shallow lagoon famous for its wind and birdlife. The island is a long, flat stretch of sand dunes, dunes grass and resort buildings, linked to the mainland by a causeway. Its character comes from the open Gulf on one side and the calm lagoon on the other, which shapes the light and the wind across the whole island.

What to watch and when

The camera shows a coastal view, so the most rewarding moments are usually early morning, when the light comes low over the water, and late afternoon, when the sun sets behind the land. Wind, cloud cover and sea colour change quickly here, and on sunny days the water can look bright turquoise. Because the view depends on the weather and the tide, the picture can look very different from one hour to the next.

Climate and getting there

South Padre Island has a warm, humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. Spring and autumn are often the most comfortable months for visiting, while summer brings heat and strong storms. Nearby cameras on the same island include the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway, the Surf Company and the Sand Beach Resort, which give extra views of the coast.
