This live camera looks out from Terry Peak, a ski mountain at roughly 2,142 metres in the Black Hills of western South Dakota. It is useful for checking mountain conditions and how the weather is moving across the hills before you head up or down the valley.
Terry Peak sits in the northern Black Hills, a forested upland of pine and granite rising out of the surrounding plains. The area is known for its rugged ridges, old gold-mining history and the nearby town of Deadwood, which has preserved much of its frontier character. The hills look very different from the open prairie just a few miles away, and that contrast is part of their appeal.
Depending on the view, the camera may show slopes, tree lines, lift areas or wide stretches of forest and sky. Mountain views change quickly, so watch for cloud build-up in the afternoon, snow cover in winter, and fresh green in late spring. Early morning and late afternoon light tend to bring out the shape of the ridges most clearly.
The Black Hills have a continental climate with hot summers, cold winters and sudden weather changes at altitude. Summer and early autumn are generally the most comfortable months for hiking and scenic drives. Nearby cameras in Deadwood and Spearfish give you a sense of conditions in the valleys, which can differ noticeably from the summit.
