Charlo — Mission Mountain Range

Charlo - Mission Mountain Range

🇺🇸 Montana · United States — Altitude 896 m

Local time UTC-6Checked 172 viewsHDMountains

This camera looks toward the Mission Mountains from the Charlo area of northwestern Montana. It is a good way to check how the range looks right now, whether the peaks are clear or hidden by cloud, and what the sky is doing above the Mission Valley.

About the setting

Charlo sits in the Mission Valley, a broad agricultural basin on the Flathead Indian Reservation. The Mission Mountains rise steeply to the east, with sharp granite peaks that hold snow well into the year. The valley floor is quieter and more open, with fields, pasture and scattered farms, so the contrast between flat land and high ridges is the main feature of the view.

What to watch for

The range is most striking in early morning and late afternoon, when low sun picks out the ridges and shadows deepen in the cirques. Depending on the view, you may see snow on the upper slopes in spring and autumn, and clouds gathering over the peaks in the afternoon during summer. Thunderstorms are more common in warmer months, so clouds building over the range are worth watching.

Climate and getting around

Summers in this part of Montana are warm and dry, while winters are cold and snowy. Late June through September is generally the easiest time to visit the area. Polson, on the southern end of Flathead Lake, is the nearest larger town with services. Other cameras in the region include Woods Bay and Lakeside, which offer different views of the lake and valley.
