This live camera looks over the Blacktail ski area in northwestern Montana, close to Flathead Lake. It is a practical way to check conditions on the mountain before you drive up. The local time and forecast sit alongside the stream on this page.
Blacktail sits in the Flathead Valley, a short drive from Flathead Lake and the town of Lakeside. The area is known for uncrowded runs and a more relaxed feel than the larger resorts of the Rockies. At about 1,980 metres, the slopes sit above the valley floor, where forests of pine and fir give way to open terrain. The Flathead region is one of Montana's best-known outdoor districts, with lakes, rivers and mountains all close together.
Because the title names a ski area, the view is most likely of the slopes, lift line or base area, but the exact frame is not described here. Winter brings the most activity, with snow cover and fresh powder usually drawing attention in the morning. In shoulder seasons you may see bare ground and the mountain outline instead. Weather changes quickly at this altitude, so checking the live view before heading out is worthwhile.
The ski season usually runs from late autumn into spring, and the mid-winter months are the most reliable for snow. Summer is warm and green, suited to hiking and sightseeing around the lake. Nearby cameras cover Lakeside at Volunteer Park, the Lone Pine area near Kalispell, and Evergreen at Osprey Pole, which help you judge conditions across the valley. Kalispell is the main town for supplies and accommodation.
