This live camera looks out over Volunteer Park in Lakeside, a small town on the western shore of Flathead Lake in northwest Montana. It is useful for a quick check of the lakeside conditions before you plan a visit or a drive into the Flathead Valley.
Lakeside sits on the western side of Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, with the Mission Mountains to the east and the forested ridges of the Swan Range further off. The town is a summer base for boating, fishing and hiking, and it sits at roughly 886 metres above sea level, so the air is cooler than in the lowlands. The lake and the surrounding mountains shape the mood of the place more than any single building.
The view centres on the park, so what you see depends on the season and the weather. In summer you may notice boats, people on the grass and the water changing colour through the day. In autumn the larches and cottonwoods turn gold, and in winter the lake edge and snow on the hills give a quieter picture. Early morning and late evening are often the calmest times, when the water is flat and the light is low and warm.
Summers are warm and dry, with long daylight hours, while winters are cold and snowy. Late June through September is the most popular time to visit. Nearby cameras include Woods Bay, about 13 km away, Blacktail ski area at 12 km, and the Kalispell views roughly 19 to 22 km to the north, which give a good sense of the wider valley weather.
