This camera looks at Cooke City, a small mountain town at the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park in Montana. It is a useful window for anyone checking road and mountain conditions before heading into the high country.
Cooke City sits at roughly 2,300 metres in the Beartooth Mountains, close to the Montana and Wyoming border. The town grew out of mining in the nineteenth century and today lives mainly from summer visitors heading to Yellowstone and the Beartooth Highway. The surrounding terrain is alpine, with steep slopes, open meadows and a landscape that changes quickly with the weather.
Because this is a town camera, you can follow everyday activity on the main street and the approach roads. Views are most informative in the early morning and late afternoon, when light is low and snow or cloud on the peaks is easiest to judge. In winter, the picture is useful for checking whether the roads look clear, though the live view cannot replace official road reports.
Summers are short and mild, while winters are long, cold and snowy, and the Beartooth Highway is normally closed by snow for much of the year. The best time to visit is usually from June to September, when the highway is open. Nearby cameras on this site include Cooke City at the Exxon West and Sinclair stations, Pebble Creek further along the valley, and Red Lodge to the north.
