Duluth sits at the western tip of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake by surface area in the world. The city grew around its natural harbor and became one of the busiest inland ports in North America, moving grain, iron ore and coal. The lighthouse at the end of the South Pier is one of the landmarks that marks the entrance to the harbor, and the lake shapes the mood of the whole waterfront.
A port camera like this one usually shows ships entering and leaving the channel, tugs, breakwater traffic and the play of waves against the pier. Shipping on the Great Lakes follows the seasons, so views are busiest in the navigation season from spring to late autumn. Early mornings and calm evenings often give the clearest light, though fog and wind can change the view quickly.
Duluth has a cool continental climate, with cold winters, mild summers and a strong lake effect that can bring cooler air and fog to the shoreline even in summer. Late June through September is the most comfortable season for visiting. The nearby Canal, Bridge and Beach cameras show other parts of the waterfront, so you can compare conditions across the harbor.
