Duluth - Canal
🇺🇸 Minnesota · United States — Altitude 178 m
This live camera looks over the canal at Duluth, a port city at the western tip of Lake Superior. It is useful for checking ship traffic and lake conditions before you visit or plan a trip to the North Shore. The page also shows local time and weather alongside the stream.
Duluth sits on a steep hillside above the St. Louis River estuary and the far western end of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake by surface area in the world. The city grew around its harbor, which has long handled grain, iron ore and other bulk cargo. The atmosphere is shaped by cold water, open horizons and a working waterfront that stays busy through the navigation season.
The canal is the focal point of the stream, so the most telling things to follow are vessels entering or leaving the harbor, the state of the water and the sky over the lake. Activity tends to be strongest in the warmer months when shipping is at its peak. Depending on the view, you may also notice fog rolling in off the lake, which can change within minutes.
Summers in Duluth are mild and pleasant, while winters are long, cold and snowy, and the harbor is typically quiet from midwinter until spring. The best months for a visit are late spring through early autumn. The camera is close to the Aerial Lift Bridge, the Lake Walk and the South Pier Lighthouse, and the Great Lake Aquarium lies about a kilometre away.
