Helen sits on the Chattahoochee River at roughly 440 metres above sea level, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge range. In the 1960s the town was reshaped into a Bavarian-style village, with half-timbered facades, painted murals and a steep wooded backdrop. It is one of the best-known mountain destinations in the state, drawing visitors for its shops, restaurants, river tubing and the hiking trails of the nearby Chattahoochee National Forest.
