A high lake town
Balykchy sits on the northwestern shore of Issyk-Kul, one of the largest mountain lakes in the world, at about 1,600 metres above sea level. The lake never freezes in most of its area, which gives the shoreline a milder feel than the surrounding high valleys. The town grew around fishing and rail links, and the Tian Shan mountains rise steeply to the south and north, shaping the light and the winds over the water.
