This live camera looks out over Karuizawa, a summer retreat town in the highlands of Nagano Prefecture. People tune in to check conditions before a trip, to see how the season is changing, or simply to watch the town at its own pace. The page adds local time and weather next to the stream so you can judge the moment at a glance.
Karuizawa sits at roughly 934 metres above sea level on the southern slopes near Mount Asama, one of Japan's active volcanoes. The town grew up in the Meiji era as a cool refuge from the summer heat of Tokyo, and it still carries that character, with tree-lined streets, villas, shops and a relaxed mountain atmosphere. The surrounding plateau is known for its forests and open meadows.
The view is most rewarding in clear morning light, when the air is usually crisp and the mountain outline is easiest to make out. Autumn brings changing leaves to the surrounding woods, while summer evenings can be pleasant and cool. Winter views depend on snowfall, so the scene can change dramatically from one day to the next. Compare the live weather on this page with what appears on screen.
Karuizawa has warm, often humid summers that are noticeably cooler than the lowlands, and cold, dry winters with occasional snow. Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons to visit. The town is reached by Shinkansen to Karuizawa Station, and nearby cameras in Komoro, Ueda and Nagawa show other parts of the Nagano region for comparison.
