Langenferner - Glaciers du Cevedale - Martell - Tyrol du Sud (Val Martello)
๐ฎ๐น Trentino-South Tyrol ยท Italy โ Altitude 3300 m
This camera looks up at the Langenferner, one of the glaciers of the Cevedale massif above Val Martello in South Tyrol. It is useful for anyone planning a high mountain trip who wants to see the snow and ice conditions and the weather before setting out. The live player is embedded from the owner's stream, with local time and forecast shown below it.
Langenferner sits in the Cevedale group, part of the Ortler Alps on the border of Trentino and South Tyrol. The valley of Martello, also called Martell, runs south from the Vinschgau and is known for its rugged granite and gneiss peaks, wide high pastures and a strong mountain farming tradition. At around 3,300 metres the glacier is a classic example of the alpine ice fields that have been shrinking in recent decades.
The title places the camera on the glacier, so the image should be dominated by snow, ice and rock rather than village roofs. Depending on the angle and cloud, you may see fresh snow in early summer, bare ice later in the season, or clouds moving across the summits. Mornings often bring the clearest air before afternoon thunderstorms build over the peaks, which is why many people check early.
Val Martello is reached by road from Schlanders, and the upper valley is quiet, with mountain huts and trails. Summer is the main season for walking, while the winter months bring ski touring and snowshoe routes. Other cameras in the area include Stilfs at Madritsch Sulden, Kanzel in Sulden, I Forni in Santa Caterina Valfurva and Pejo 3000, all within about 11 kilometres.
