About Meran and its setting
Meran is a spa town in the Adige valley of South Tyrol, in northern Italy, set between steep mountain flanks at roughly 300 metres above sea level. It grew rich in the nineteenth century as a health resort, and its promenades, gardens and old villas still reflect that period. The Marlinger Berg rises to the west of town, so from this height you look over the valley floor toward the wooded and terraced slopes on the far side. The mix of Alpine and Mediterranean-influenced vegetation is one of the region's distinctive features.
