This live stream looks toward Mount St. Helens from the Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center in southwest Washington. It is a useful way to see the volcano's current conditions, cloud cover and the state of the snow before planning a trip. The page also shows local weather and time for the area.
Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano in the Cascade Range, roughly 50 kilometres north of Portland, Oregon. Its 1980 eruption changed the surrounding landscape dramatically, leaving a broad blast zone and a crater that has been slowly rebuilding with new lava domes. The area is now part of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, known for its geology and the regrowth of forest and meadow.
The camera is positioned at a visitor centre on a ridge, so the view depends on the weather and the season. Depending on the conditions, you may see the summit, cloud banks drifting across the slopes or fresh snow in winter. Mornings often give the clearest air, while afternoon clouds frequently build over the peak in summer.
The region has a wet maritime climate, with heavy rain and snow in winter and mild, drier summers that are the most popular time to hike. Coldwater Ridge is one of several viewpoints around the monument. Nearby cameras on this site cover the Coolitz River area, the Rainier region and Chehalis, which can help you compare conditions across the wider region.
