This live camera looks out over Madison, a small city in eastern South Dakota on the prairie north of Sioux Falls. Watch the stream to get a sense of the town and the open Plains sky as it changes through the day. The page also shows local conditions so you can judge the weather before you plan a trip.
Madison sits at about 490 metres above sea level in Lake County, in the flat farmland of eastern South Dakota. It is best known as the home of Dakota State University and as a regional centre for agriculture and education. The surrounding landscape is mostly rolling prairie, dotted with farms, small lakes and shelterbelts of trees planted against the wind.
Because the land here is open and flat, skies play a large role in the view, and clouds move quickly across the horizon. Mornings and late afternoons usually bring the softest light. Seasons change the scene noticeably: green fields in summer, harvested land in autumn, and snow cover in winter. Depending on the view, you may also notice weather fronts building over the prairie.
Madison has a continental climate with hot summers, cold winters and windy spring weather. Late spring and early autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons for visiting. The city is about an hour's drive north of Sioux Falls, and the lakes of Lake Preston lie within the wider region. Nearby cameras on this page cover Lake Preston, Spencer and Sioux Falls.
