This live view looks out over the beach at Rodanthe, a small village on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is a useful place to check sea state and sky before heading to the shore. The stream is provided by its owner and is embedded here with a link to the source.
Rodanthe sits on a narrow barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and the calm Pamlico Sound. The village is known for its quiet, unhurried pace, long sandy beaches and its role as a base for surfing, kiteboarding and fishing. The landscape is low and open, with dunes, marsh and a lighthouse-lined coast nearby. Much of the island is protected as part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
The camera is titled as a beach view, so it is aimed at the sand and surf rather than the village streets. Depending on the angle at any moment, you may see waves, the shoreline and the sky. Watching early in the morning or late in the afternoon often gives the clearest light, while stormy weather can make the surf much rougher and more dramatic to observe.
Summers are warm and humid, with the most comfortable beach weather from late spring through early autumn. Hurricane season runs from June to November, so check conditions if you plan a trip then. Rodanthe is reached by Highway 12 along the island. Nearby cameras on the same coast include the Soundside view, the Fishing Pier and several Waves views a few kilometres away.
