This live stream looks out from Appledore Island, the largest of the Isles of Shoals off the New Hampshire coast. It is a useful window onto the Gulf of Maine, showing the water and sky as they change through the day. Check it before a boat trip or simply to see what the ocean is doing.
Appledore is one of nine small rocky islands about ten kilometres off the coast of Maine and New Hampshire. It is known for its marine research station, run by Shoals Marine Laboratory, which has studied the local sea life for decades. The island is mostly bare granite and grassy ground with little tree cover, so the views are wide and the weather can change quickly on the open Atlantic.
Because the camera is listed as a nature view, expect the focus to be on open water, sky and coastline rather than buildings. Depending on the angle, you may see waves, passing boats and shifting light. Early morning and late afternoon tend to be the most atmospheric, when low sun brings out the texture of the sea and the rocks.
The islands are reached by boat from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and the crossing takes roughly an hour, depending on conditions. Summer is the most popular season, with milder seas and longer days, while autumn and spring can bring stronger winds. Nearby cameras on Star Island and Wood Island show other parts of the Shoals and the coast.
