This live camera looks out over Mono Lake, an ancient saline lake on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. Watch the water, the tufa towers and the shifting light over the basin, which change noticeably from hour to hour and season to season.
Mono Lake sits at about 1,960 metres in a closed basin east of the Sierra Nevada, with no outlet to the sea. Its water is far saltier and more alkaline than the ocean, which is why few fish live there, while large numbers of migrating birds, including brine shrimp-feeding gulls, depend on it. The limestone tufa towers along the shore formed where springs rich in calcium met the lake water, and they are one of the area's best-known features.
Because the lake is wide and open, the view mostly depends on weather and light rather than on activity close to the shore. Early morning often brings calm water and reflections, while late afternoon light can pick out the surrounding mountain slopes. Winter storms and snow can change the scene quickly, so the live picture is the best way to judge conditions at the moment you look.
The climate is high-desert: summers are warm and dry with cool nights, and winters are cold with snow possible. Late spring, summer and early autumn are the easiest seasons for visiting. Mammoth Lakes, about 46 km away, is the closest town with services, and its own cameras are listed nearby on this page.

The current conditions and the three-day forecast are shown in the live weather block on this page, updated for the lake's location. Because the site is high and exposed, conditions can differ noticeably from the nearest towns.
The local time for Mono Lake, which follows the Pacific time zone, is shown live on this page. It updates automatically, so you can check it before you watch the stream.
The camera is located on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada in California, at about 1,960 metres altitude. The map on this page marks its position so you can see how it sits in the basin.
Early morning and late afternoon usually give the most interesting light on the water and the mountains. Seasonal changes, such as snow in winter or birds during migration, also make the view worth checking at different times of year.
