This live camera looks out over Kodiak, a city on Kodiak Island at the edge of the Gulf of Alaska. The feed is embedded from its owner, and this page adds the local time, current conditions and a short forecast so you can judge the view before you watch.
Kodiak sits on the largest island in the Kodiak Archipelago, southwest of the Alaska Peninsula. The town is best known as a fishing port and as the home of a large Coast Guard base, and it is surrounded by mountains, fjord-like bays and a rugged, treeless coastline. The Kodiak brown bear, one of the largest bears in the world, lives on the island and is the area's best-known wildlife. The atmosphere is that of a working harbor at the far end of a long, wild coast.
The camera is most rewarding in the long northern daylight of summer, when the sky stays light for many hours and boats are moving in and out of the harbor. In winter the days are short and the weather can change quickly, with wind and snow, so the view may be grey or partly obscured. Check the live weather block on this page before you watch, since cloud and fog often decide how much of the scenery you will see.
Kodiak has a maritime climate: cool summers, mild but wet winters and strong winds for much of the year. The most comfortable months for visiting are roughly May through September. The town is reached by air or by ferry, as there are no road links to the rest of Alaska. The camera is a good way to check conditions before planning a trip, and no other cameras are listed nearby in this directory.
