Alyeska - Glacier Bowl
🇺🇸 Alaska · United States — Altitude 809 m
This live camera looks over the Glacier Bowl area at Alyeska, a mountain resort in southcentral Alaska set on the flanks of the Chugach Range. It is useful for checking snow and sky conditions above the resort before you commit to a trip from Anchorage or Whittier.
Alyeska sits near the head of Turnagain Arm, a long tidal inlet south of Anchorage, with steep peaks rising straight from the coast. The resort is known as one of the larger ski areas in Alaska, and its high bowls hold snow well into the spring. The landscape is wild and glaciated, with dense spruce forest in the valleys and bare rock and snow higher up.
Because the camera is aimed at a high alpine bowl, the view depends heavily on cloud and visibility, so you may see anything from clear peaks to a white wall of fog. Mornings after fresh snowfall are often the most striking, and long summer evenings bring soft light across the ridges. Watch the sky first: a clear window usually means good conditions for skiing or hiking.
The region has a subarctic maritime climate, with cold snowy winters and cool, wet summers. Spring is typically the best time to ski, while summer and early autumn suit hiking and sightseeing. Whittier, reached by a tunnel from the Seward Highway, is about 29 km away, and the Arctic Valley ski area near Anchorage lies around 40 km off.
