This camera looks at the western quay of Lausanne, on the northern shore of Lake Geneva. It is useful for checking how the lake and the waterfront look right now before a walk, a boat trip or a drive along the Vaud coast.
Lausanne rises in terraces from the shore of Lake Geneva, the largest lake in Western Europe, and is the capital of the canton of Vaud. The waterfront is a working port area set against vineyards on the slopes behind the city. The Olympic Museum and the cathedral sit a short distance up the hill, and the lake shapes the mood of the city throughout the year.
The quay view is a port scene, so the most interesting moments are usually early morning, when the water is calm and mist may sit over the lake, and late afternoon, when the light falls across the water toward the French shore. Wind and cloud change the look of the lake quickly, so the live picture is a good guide to conditions. Boats moving in and out of the harbour are common in the warmer months.
Lausanne has warm summers and mild, often grey winters, and the lake moderates temperatures near the shore. Spring and early autumn are pleasant for walking the quays. The city is well served by train and by the lake steamers that connect with towns along the shore. Nearby cameras include EPFL in Lausanne, the Pont Bessières view, the port at Morges and the village of Lutry above the water.
