This live camera looks out over Narvik, a port town in Troms county above the Arctic Circle. It suits anyone curious about ship movements, the fjord, or simply how the weather looks in northern Norway right now. The stream is provided by the municipality of Narvik and is embedded here with a link to its source.
Narvik sits on the shore of Ofotfjord, with steep mountains rising straight out of the water. The town grew around its ice-free harbour and the iron ore railway that runs from here into Sweden, which is why it has been a working port for more than a century. During the Second World War it was the scene of fierce naval battles. Today it is a compact town of cafes, museums and easy access to hiking in the surrounding hills.
As a harbour camera, the most interesting moments are usually when vessels arrive, load or leave, so it is worth checking at the start or end of the working day. Light changes a lot with the season: in winter the days are short and the low sun can colour the mountains, while in summer the light lasts long into the evening. Fog, snow showers and wind on the fjord are common, and they will be visible on the stream whenever they occur.
Narvik has a coastal subarctic climate, milder than its latitude suggests thanks to the Gulf Stream, but winters are cold and dark. Summer is the most comfortable season for walking and visiting. The town is reached by road, by rail on the Ofoten Line, or by air via Harstad/Narvik Airport Evenes. Nearby cameras in the region, including Riksgransen, Bjorkliden and Harstad, can help you compare conditions across Troms.
