🇰🇬 Issyk-Kul Region · Kyrgyzstan — Altitude 1690 m
This live stream looks out over Karakol, the main town of the Issyk-Kul Region in eastern Kyrgyzstan. Its title points to a mountain setting, so the view is likely to take in the town against the surrounding ranges. Check it to see current conditions before you plan a trip to the lake shore or the high valleys.
Karakol sits at roughly 1,690 metres on the eastern end of Lake Issyk-Kul, one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world. It grew from a Russian frontier outpost into a market and education centre, and it is known today as a base for trekking into the Tian Shan and for the wooden Dungan mosque and the Russian Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral. The air is clear and the mountains rise close to the town on most sides.
Depending on the view, you may see streets, rooftops, tree-lined avenues and the mountain backdrop. The light changes a great deal across the day: early morning often brings clear air and low sun on the peaks, while late afternoon can build clouds over the ranges. Snow cover on the mountains is most visible in winter and spring, and summer haze is more common in the lowlands.
Karakol has warm summers, with daytime temperatures often in the twenties Celsius, and cold, snowy winters. Late spring through early autumn is the usual time for hiking and lake visits. Nearby cameras cover Ysyk Kol, Tyup and Karkara, which help you judge conditions around the wider Issyk-Kul area before you travel.
