Karasawa - Cirque - Hotaka
🇯🇵 Nagano · Japan — Altitude 2300 m
This camera looks toward the Karasawa cirque, a glacial hollow beneath the Hotaka range in the Japanese Alps of Nagano Prefecture. It is useful for anyone wondering how the high peaks look right now, or whether the mountain is clear enough for a trek.
Karasawa sits at about 2,300 metres in the northern part of the Japanese Alps, close to the Kamikochi valley. The cirque is a bowl carved by old glaciers, framed by steep rock faces of the Hotaka group. The surrounding forests of spruce and fir give way to bare granite and snow fields higher up, and the scenery changes noticeably with the seasons.
Depending on the view, the stream may show snow-covered slopes in winter, fresh green in early summer and autumn colours in October. Mornings often bring the clearest air, while clouds frequently build over the peaks in the afternoon. Watching around sunrise is a good way to spot changing light on the rock walls.
Summers are mild and the main hiking season runs from roughly June to October, when trails are generally open. Winters are cold with heavy snowfall, and access is limited. The valley is reached by road and bus from Matsumoto, and nearby cameras such as Kamikochi and Azumino - Terrace show other parts of the region.
