This live view follows Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes, rising from Kagoshima Bay in southern Kyushu. Use it to check on the volcano before you travel, or simply to see how the island looks at this moment.
Sakurajima is a volcanic island at the mouth of Kagoshima Bay, and it was joined to the Osumi Peninsula by lava flows from a large eruption in 1914. Its slopes are covered in dense greenery and it is among the most closely monitored volcanoes in the country. The city of Kagoshima on the opposite shore is known for the smoke that often drifts across the water, and for its warm sulfur springs and local food made from sweet potato and black pork.
The camera is most rewarding when the air is clear, because the crater plume is easiest to see in the morning and late afternoon light. Plumes rise and change direction with the wind, so the view can look very different within an hour. Overcast or rainy days can hide the summit completely. Read the live weather block on this page before you expect to see the peak clearly.
Kagoshima has a humid subtropical climate, with hot and humid summers and mild winters, and the spring and autumn months are often the most comfortable for sightseeing. Ferries cross from the city to the island in about fifteen minutes. Nearby cameras include Shimonoseki, the Volcan Sakurajima view from Kagoshima, Aira and Tarumizu, which can help you compare the volcano from different sides of the bay.
