This live camera looks out over Kusasenri, a high grassland plateau in Oita Prefecture on Kyushu. It is a place where people watch changing light over open ground and distant ridges. The stream below is provided by its owner, and this page adds local time, weather and a map.
Kusasenri sits at around 1,100 metres on the rim of the Aso volcanic region, on the Oita side of the mountains. It is known for its wide meadows, which are shaped by volcanic soil and regular burning that keeps the grass low and open. The landscape changes noticeably with altitude and cloud, so the same view can look very different from one visit to the next.
Because the view is dominated by open grassland and sky, the most interesting moments are usually early morning, when mist may lie over the plateau, and late afternoon, when the light lowers and shadows lengthen. Clouds moving across the caldera can change the scene quickly. Depending on the view and conditions, you may see grass colour shift with the seasons, most noticeably in autumn.
The highlands are cooler than the nearby lowlands, and temperatures can drop sharply in the evening even in warmer months. Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons, and checking the weather block on this page before planning a trip is sensible. Nearby cameras include Beppu, Hiraodai and a Kitakyushu grassland camera, which are useful for comparing conditions across the region.
