This live camera looks out over Orvieto, the cliff-top town in Umbria that sits on a massive volcanic tufa rock. Watch it to check conditions before a visit, to see how light and cloud move across the hills, or simply to keep an eye on one of central Italy's most distinctive settlements.
Orvieto stands on a steep plateau of volcanic tuff in the province of Terni, roughly 320 metres above sea level. It is known for its Gothic cathedral with striped stone faรงade, its underground passages and wells carved into the rock, and its white wine. The surrounding countryside of Umbria is gentle, green and farmed, which contrasts strongly with the sheer cliffs beneath the old town.
The view is most rewarding in the softer hours of morning and late afternoon, when low sun picks out the warm colour of the stone and long shadows fall across the valleys. Depending on the view, you may notice changing cloud over the hills, mist in the lower valleys on cool days, or the lights of the town after dusk. Check the live feed before planning a walk up from the station or the funicular.
Umbria has hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, with spring and autumn generally the most comfortable times to visit. Orvieto is easy to reach by train from Rome and Florence, and the old town is best explored on foot. Nearby, you can watch the Civita Bagnoregio camera, a dramatic village on its own eroding tuff ridge, and the Todi camera, another hilltop town about 25 km away.
