Piancavallo - Sauc
🇮🇹 Friuli Venezia Giulia · Italy — Altitude 1700 m
This camera watches the Piancavallo ski and summer resort in the Prealps of Friuli Venezia Giulia, at about 1700 metres. It is useful for checking how the mountain looks before a trip, whether snow is still on the slopes, or how cloud is sitting over the ridges.
Piancavallo is a high pasture plateau above the town of Aviano in northeastern Italy, reached by a winding road from the Pordenone plain. It is best known as a ski area in winter and as a base for walking and mountain biking in summer. The surrounding peaks of the Dolomiti Friulane and the wide meadows give the place an open, quiet character that is quite different from the lowland towns nearby.
The stream is titled Sauc, referring to the Sauc area of the resort, so it is aimed at the slopes and ridges rather than the village streets. Views are often most readable in the morning, when light falls clearly on the mountains, and in clear winter weather when snow cover is easiest to judge. Low cloud or fog can roll in quickly here, so the live view is worth checking before you set out.
The climate is alpine, with cold snowy winters and mild, fresh summers, and the resort is at its busiest in January and February and again in July and August. Piancavallo sits within reach of Maniago and the Friulian Prealps, and the Busa del Sauc camera nearby shows the same area from another angle. The resort is served mainly by road, so a car is the most practical way to arrive.
