About Ngandong and Merapi

Sleman is a regency north of the city of Yogyakarta, on the fertile volcanic plains of central Java. Ngandong sits at roughly 870 metres above sea level on the approach to Merapi, a stratovolcano that has erupted repeatedly and shapes daily life here through farming, tourism and hazard planning. The landscape is green, terraced and dotted with villages, with the cone rising in the distance on clear days.

What to watch and when

Depending on the view, you may see the volcano's slopes, vegetation, roads and village buildings. Early morning is often the clearest period, before clouds build over the peaks in the afternoon. Heavy rain and haze can reduce visibility at any time, so the stream may show little detail during wet weather. Watching during the dry season, roughly May to October, usually gives the best chance of a clear picture.

Climate and getting around

The area has a tropical climate with a wet season from about November to March and a drier period in the middle of the year. Temperatures are milder than in the lowlands because of the altitude. Yogyakarta is the main gateway, and the Kaliurang road leads up the mountain toward the nearby monitoring and tourist points.
