The mountain and its setting
Großer Arber rises to about 1,450 metres on the border region between Bavaria and the Bohemian side of the Bavarian Forest. It is one of the best-known hiking and winter sports mountains in eastern Germany, with forests, granite outcrops and a cable car to the top. The Sonnenfels hut sits at roughly 1,150 metres, so the view takes in the rolling wooded ridges that run toward the north-west.
