This live stream from Punta Arenas, the southernmost major city on the Chilean mainland, lets you see the Strait of Magellan region as it is right now. Check it before planning a trip, or simply to see what the weather looks like at the edge of the continent.
Punta Arenas sits on the northern shore of the Strait of Magellan, the sea passage that long linked the Atlantic and Pacific before the Panama Canal. The city is the capital of the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region and grew around shipping, sheep farming and, later, oil and gas. The landscape is open steppe, wind-swept and often grey-green, with mountains visible to the west on clear days.
The camera is titled simply with the city name, so the exact view is not described in the listing, and you may see the city skyline, the waterfront or open sky depending on the angle. Wind, cloud and light change quickly here. Mornings and late afternoons often bring the clearest light, while long summer evenings give extended daylight to watch the sky and the strait.
The climate is cold and windy for most of the year, with cool summers and winters that are mild by regional standards but still chilly. The best time to visit is from late November to March, when days are longest. Punta Arenas has its own airport with flights to Santiago, and the nearby Ushuaia camera, about 247 km away across the water, offers a similar view of the southern coast.
