This camera looks out over Water Valley, a small community in the foothills of southwestern Alberta. It is a quiet place to watch the mountain light change through the day. The live player is paired with local conditions so you can judge the view before you go.
Water Valley sits in the foothills west of Calgary, where the prairie gradually gives way to the Rocky Mountains. The surrounding country is a mix of open grassland, farmland and wooded slopes, shaped by the Clearwater and Ghost river systems to the south. Its elevation of about 1,290 metres gives it cooler nights and clearer air than the city below. Many visitors use it as a base for hiking and quiet rural drives.
Depending on the view, you may see open land, distant ridgelines and the changing sky that is typical of this part of Alberta. Mountain weather can shift quickly, so cloud cover, snow on the peaks and low sun angles are worth watching. Early morning and late afternoon usually bring the most dramatic light. Seasonal changes are strong, with green summers, golden autumns and snowy winters.
Summers are mild and winters are cold, with snow common from November to March. Late spring and early autumn are often the most comfortable times to visit. Calgary is about an hour away by road and has the nearest airport. You can also compare views from nearby cameras at Widcat, Calgary, Canmore and Banff, which show different parts of the same mountain region.
