This live camera looks out over Dodge City, the Kansas town famous for its cattle trade and its role in the history of the American frontier. Check it to see current conditions in the city before you travel or simply to follow the weather on the southern Plains.
Dodge City sits on the Arkansas River in southwest Kansas, roughly 760 metres above sea level. It grew up in the 1870s as a railhead and supply point on the Santa Fe Trail, and its story of cattle drives, buffalo hunters and lawmen made it one of the best-known frontier towns in the country. Today the economy still leans on agriculture and meatpacking, and the surrounding landscape is open grassland and wheat fields stretching to the horizon.
As a city camera, the view is most useful for judging the sky, the weather and the flow of traffic and town life at different hours. Mornings and late afternoons often bring the clearest light and the most dramatic cloud over the plains, while summer storms can build quickly in the afternoon. Seasonal changes are strong here, from green spring fields to bare winter streets.
Dodge City has a continental climate with hot summers, cold winters and windy conditions most of the year, and spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons to visit. If you want to compare conditions across the region, nearby cameras in Pratt, Great Bend, Hays and Guymon are all within a few hours' drive and give a wider picture of the Kansas and Oklahoma panhandle skies.
