Salmon is a small town in east-central Idaho, sitting in the Lemhi River valley at roughly 1,200 metres above sea level. It is often called the River of No Return gateway, because the Salmon River flows through a deep canyon that is among the wildest in the lower 48 states. The surrounding country is a mix of sagebrush benches, cottonwood-lined river banks and forested mountains rising toward the Salmon-Challis National Forest.
Ospreys are fish-eating hawks that return to the same nesting sites year after year, and they are usually most active in the warmer months when they are raising young. Depending on the view, you may see birds arriving with fish, adults tending the nest or chicks waiting for food. Early morning and late afternoon often bring the most movement, while midday can be quieter. Weather and the stream's availability can affect what is visible at any time.
Summers in the Salmon valley are warm and dry, with cold winters and snow in the surrounding mountains. Spring and early autumn are comfortable times to visit the river country. Nearby on VizCams you can also open the Granite County Warren Peak camera, about 96 km away, as well as the Lower Stanley, Virginia City and Black Butte cameras. Check the weather block on this page before planning a trip.
