This live view looks toward Schweitzer, a ski and mountain resort above Lake Pend Oreille in northern Idaho. It is useful for anyone wondering what the slopes look like right now or whether snow is settling on the mountain before a trip.
Schweitzer sits at about 1,950 metres in the Selkirk Mountains, a short drive from Sandpoint on the shore of Lake Pend Oreille. The area is known for its skiing and snowboarding terrain in winter and for hiking, mountain biking and lake days in summer. The landscape is mostly forested ridges, with conifers covering the slopes and the lake glinting in the valley below.
The camera is most rewarding on clear mornings, when low sun lights the runs and shows fresh snow or the first autumn colours on the larches. In winter, watch for new snowfall and the lifts running. Summer views tend to be greener and busier with hikers and bikers. Cloud often rolls over the peaks in the afternoon, so mornings are usually the best time to check.
Winters are cold and snowy, while summers are warm and dry, and the lake area can be pleasant even when the mountain is windy. Late December through March suits skiers, and July to September suits hikers. For another angle, the Schweitzer Basin Express camera about a kilometre away shows the lower lift area, and Sandpoint and Priest Lake cameras give a wider picture of the region.
