About Cortez and its setting
Cortez sits on the mainland shore of Sarasota Bay area, a low, flat stretch of Florida just a few metres above sea level. The village is best known for its working fishing fleet, its historic waterfront and the Florida Fishing Museum, and it has kept much of the feel of an old commercial harbour. Mangroves, tidal creeks and shallow flats shape the scenery around it, so the mood changes quickly with the tide and the light.
What you can watch on the camera
The camera is most rewarding in the early morning, when boats leave the harbour and the water is often calm, and again in late afternoon when the low sun turns the bay gold. Winters are mild and dry, which makes them the most comfortable time to visit, while summers are hot and humid with frequent thunderstorms. Cortez is a short drive from Anna Maria Island and Bradenton, and the nearby Harbour Isle and Anna Maria cameras show neighbouring coastline. Siesta Key is further south and is a good next stop if you want to compare beaches.
