This live camera looks out over the town of Akron on the eastern Colorado plains, about 1,400 metres above sea level. It is a useful window onto open prairie skies, changing weather and daylight across the Great Plains. The page also shows local time and conditions so you can judge what the view looks like before you watch.
Akron is the county seat of Washington County, a small agricultural town in northeastern Colorado. The area is flat, wide and dominated by grain fields, grazing land and very large skies, with the Rocky Mountains lying far to the west. Life here follows farming seasons and the rhythm of the highway that runs through the region. It is a quiet place, and its character comes from the land and the weather more than from any single landmark.
Because the terrain is open, the camera is best suited to following sky conditions: approaching storms, sunrise and sunset light, and clouds moving across the horizon. Dawn and dusk tend to give the most dramatic colour, while summer afternoons often bring towering cumulus and occasional thunderstorms. Winter views can show snow cover and clear, cold air. How much you see depends on the view and the weather at the time you tune in.
Eastern Colorado has a semi-arid continental climate with hot summers, cold winters and relatively little rain, most of it falling in late spring and summer. Spring and early autumn are generally the most comfortable months for travellers. Akron is reached mainly by road, and the nearby cameras at Brush, Yuma, Lone Mountain and Fort Morgan are useful for comparing conditions across the surrounding plains.
