This camera points at Mount Spurr, a glaciated volcano in the Alaska Range west of Anchorage. Watch the live stream to see the summit and surrounding terrain as conditions change through the day.
Mount Spurr is an active stratovolcano in the Unorganized Borough of Alaska, rising to a summit near 3,300 metres and standing in the Aleutian volcanic arc. Its slopes are covered by snow and glacier ice for much of the year, and the wider area is remote wilderness with few roads. The volcano is monitored by the Alaska Volcano Observatory because of its history of eruptions, including activity in 1992. Visitors who come here usually do so by small aircraft or on expedition.
The view depends on the angle of the camera, so you may see the snowfields, rock faces and the summit ridge, or mostly cloud on a poor day. Clear mornings tend to give the best visibility, while afternoon clouds often build over the peaks. Long daylight in summer makes it easy to follow the scene for many hours, and winter views show a stark, snow-covered landscape with short days.
The region has a subarctic climate with cold winters and cool, short summers, and weather on the mountain can change quickly with wind and cloud. Late spring to early autumn is the most practical period for travel, although access remains limited. Anchorage is the main gateway to the area. Because no other cameras are listed nearby, this stream is a good way to check the mountain from a distance.
