This live camera looks out over Porthleven, a small fishing harbour on the Lizard peninsula in west Cornwall. It is useful for checking how the sea and sky look before you travel, or simply for watching the working harbour from afar.
Porthleven sits on the south coast of Cornwall, in a sheltered cove where a granite harbour wall curves into the Atlantic approach. The village grew around fishing and granite trade and still keeps a lively character, with narrow streets, cafΓ©s and small galleries close to the water. The surrounding coast is rugged, with cliffs and coves typical of the Lizard peninsula, and the Cornish landscape changes quickly with the weather.
The camera shows the harbour setting and the sea beyond it, so the view depends heavily on tide and wind. Calm mornings often bring flat water and clear light, while stronger Atlantic swells make the harbour wall more dramatic, especially in autumn and winter. Evenings in summer can be long and soft, and the stream is a handy way to judge conditions before heading down to the coast.
Cornwall has a mild, wet maritime climate, so temperatures rarely fall far below freezing or rise very high, but rain and wind are frequent. The late spring and early autumn months are often the most pleasant for walking the coast path. Porthleven is reached by road from Helston, and nearby camera views of Kennack Sands, Poldhu and Marazion are also available on VizCams for comparison.
