Simplon - Col du Simplon
🇨🇭 Valais · Switzerland — Altitude 2007 m
This camera looks out over the Simplon Pass, the high road that links the Rhône valley in Valais with the Italian side of the Alps. Watch it to see how the pass looks right now and whether the road above the tree line is clear. The page also shows local time and the current weather.
The Simplon Pass sits at roughly 2,000 metres in the Lepontine Alps near the town of Brig. For centuries it has been one of the main routes between northern Europe and Italy, and the Simplon Tunnel built under the mountain in the early 1900s still carries rail traffic beneath it. The surrounding landscape is open alpine terrain with meadows, rock and larch forest lower down, and the pass is known for its wide views toward the Bernese and Valais peaks.
Because the camera is set high on the pass, weather changes are often visible before they reach the valley. Clear mornings tend to give the sharpest view of the surrounding ridges, while afternoon cloud often builds over the peaks in summer. In winter the pass is usually snow-covered, and the view changes with fresh snowfall and wind. The livestream is a good way to judge conditions before a drive over the pass.
The Simplon Pass has a typical high-alpine climate with cool summers and long, snowy winters. The road is usually open from late spring to autumn, but seasonal closures happen when snow arrives, so check current conditions before travelling. Brig, a short drive away, offers hotels and rail connections. Nearby cameras include Brig's Hübschhorn view and the Stockalper Castle view, which give additional perspectives on the Upper Valais.
