About the dam and valley

Hérémence lies in the canton of Valais in the Swiss Alps, at about 2,360 metres above sea level. The Grande Dixence dam, completed in 1961, holds back a large reservoir and is famous for its massive concrete wall rising high above the valley floor. The surrounding landscape is steep, rocky and open, with alpine meadows lower down and glaciers and peaks in the distance. The area is known for hydroelectric engineering and for its dramatic scale.
