This live view looks toward Taiaroa Head, the headland at the tip of the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin. It is a place where wildlife and wind-swept coastline meet, so the stream is useful for checking conditions before a visit. The camera is run by the Department of Conservation.
Taiaroa Head sits at the eastern end of the Otago Peninsula, a narrow arm of volcanic land that curls into the Pacific Ocean. The area is known as a stronghold for seabirds, including the northern royal albatross, and it has long been managed for conservation. The landscape is open grassland and cliffs, shaped by strong coastal winds and the constant movement of the sea.
Depending on the view, you may see the open ocean, the headland slopes and the coastal path. Conditions change quickly here, so mornings often bring clearer skies and calmer air, while afternoons can be windier with rolling cloud. The most interesting moments tend to be in the warmer months, when seabird activity around the headland is at its busiest.
The Otago Peninsula has a cool temperate climate, with mild summers and cool, wet winters, so layers and a windproof jacket are sensible year round. The headland is a short drive from Dunedin. Other cameras in the region include Moreaki, Wanaka and Queenstown, which offer different coastal and alpine views.
