This live camera is aimed at the seals of Oudeschild, a fishing village on the island of Texel in the Dutch Wadden Sea. Watch the stream to see whether the seals are hauled out and resting or moving in the water. The page also gives you the local time and weather so you can plan a visit.
Oudeschild is the main harbour village on Texel, the largest of the West Frisian Islands. It sits on the sheltered side of the island, facing the Wadden Sea mudflats that run between the dunes and the mainland. The landscape is flat, open and shaped by wind, with dunes, polders and wide skies. Texel is known for its sheep, its lighthouse-dotted coastline and its unusually strong birdlife, especially on the tidal flats.
The camera follows the seals as the tide rises and falls, since they often rest on sandbanks and move in and out of the water with the water level. Early morning and late afternoon are often calm, and grey or windy weather can change how many animals are visible. Because this is a live stream from a fixed viewpoint, the animals may be out of frame for long stretches. Check the stream again at a different time of day if you do not see them at first.
The Dutch coast has a mild maritime climate, with cool summers and mild winters, and wind is a constant factor. Spring and summer are the most pleasant months to visit the island, and autumn brings quieter roads. Nearby on VizCams you can also open the Oudeschild lammetjes camera, the harbour marina camera, the ferry camera and the Wadden Haven camera.
