Rishirifuji - Rishiri Island
🇯🇵 Hokkaido · Japan — Altitude 784 m
This live camera looks toward Mount Rishirifuji, the volcano that rises from the middle of Rishiri Island off Japan's northwest coast. It is a good way to check how the peak and sea horizon look right now, before you plan a trip or simply enjoy a quiet view of the island.
Rishiri Island lies in the Sea of Japan off the northern tip of Hokkaido. Its centrepiece is Mount Rishirifuji, a steep, nearly symmetrical volcano whose slopes fall almost straight to the coast. The island is known for its cool maritime climate, sea urchin and kelp fishing, and the trails that climb the mountain in summer. Its shape makes it one of the most recognisable silhouettes in northern Japan.
The camera shows the mountain and the surrounding sky and water, so the view changes mainly with cloud, haze and light. Early mornings and clear evenings often give the sharpest outline of the peak, while in winter the upper slopes may be covered in snow. Weather can close in quickly over the sea, so a stretch of clear view is worth watching for. Expect the picture to shift with the seasons more than through the day.
Summer is the most comfortable season to visit, with mild temperatures and the clearest skies, while winter is cold and windy. Ferries and flights connect the island to the mainland, and the main village is a short drive from the mountain. Nearby cameras on Rishiri Island and at Senhoshi offer other angles of the coast, and Wakkanai on the mainland is the nearest larger town.
